New Gaming Generations in PC Games

AS PC game preferences have changed over the years, so have the features and game play of new PC games in development. Future PC games will continue to follow research findings involving gamers' wants and needs as the industry strives to keep up with America's continuous culture changes.

Current Trends in PC Games

The Entertainment Software Association recently conducted a 2006 consumer survey involving current computer and video game trends. Data from this study suggests that men play PC and video games nearly twice as much as women, yet women represent a larger portion of the gaming population (30%) than boys aged 17 and younger (23%). By the end of 2005 games with an E (everyone) rating were purchased most; often followed by games with a T (teen) rating, M (mature) rating, and finally E +10 (everyone 10 years or older). The most popular genre in PC gaming last year was strategy, followed by family and children entertainment, shooting games, and role playing games respectively. Genres involving adventure, action, and sports each accounted for less than 10% of computer game sales in 2005. The most popular computer games in 2005 included World of Warcraft, several Sims offshoots, Guild Wars, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, Battlefield 2, MS Age of Empires 2, and Call of Duty 2. Although people of all ages have shown an interest in computer and video games, most continue to spend considerably more time on other interests. At this time, 44% of frequent game players report playing games online. Video game sales continue to bring in around 6 times more money than computer game sales. Despite a steady increase in computer and video game sales during the late 1990's and early 2000's, sales and profits began to decrease slightly in 2005.

Is Digital Downloading the Future?

As more gamers gain access to computers with higher bandwidth and improved hardware capabilities, it seems possible that digital downloading may one day replace physical distribution as the most common form of PC game sales. Although digital downloading would be cost effective for game creators, it would also result in less control over the product and a likely increase in piracy of material. This type of acquisition benefits gamers in several different ways. First, the gamer does not need to travel anywhere to receive the product. In an age when online shopping has become commonplace, this convenience will soon become a standard in the gaming world.

Second, there's no waiting for products to arrive in the mail. With the click of a mouse, a player can gain access to one or more games and play anytime or anywhere they desire.

Third, there's no question whether or not the game will work on your computer. You know immediately whether or not your computer has adequate programs to play the game properly. Finally, the process of installing a game purchased from a retailer is removed. You simply wait for the streaming process to buffer the game 10-15% and then typically the game will begin to play. Buffering continues invisibly as you play the game. Whether future adventure games or future nascar games for PC, any type of game will be available at the click of a mouse. New NASCAR PC games for future and other games will share a convenience unmatched by their predecessors. Just as music has seen a change from records to 8-tracks, cassettes, CD's, and I Pods, so will PC games experience continued change in format.

The Evolution of Graphics and Animation in PC Games

Since its inception in 1981, the personal computer has undergone a variety of changes in features such as graphics and animation. As game consoles developed so too games with colors, easy gameplay, and low costs have developed. The personal computer has lagged behind in all three areas. Early PC's brought forth bleak displays, difficult gameplay, and often expensive price tags as the technology was still new to the marketplace. Despite all of its shortcomings, the PC did excel in presenting textual adventure games. Eventually, PC games developed more sophisticated graphics and experienced a drop in sales costs. The personal computer's memory capacity (hard drive) made it possible to continue this improvement of game features. Due to recent high costs and overproduction in the PC gaming industry, it appears that gaming consoles could continue to take sales from PC games. The latest PC games are becoming more popular through highly powerful graphic cards, reality simulation games, and increased interest in online gaming communities. These developments in technology are making the latest PC games highly desirable and fascinating products.

Just as music has recently taken on new life in the area of digital downloading, it appears as though PC games are beginning to follow suit. Whether they're downloaded in an instant or meticulously perused and purchased at a local retailer, PC games continue to be a significant means of entertainment for many Americans. Future PC games will continue to expand the technological limits within which creators and gamers operate. Creators of new PC games in development will continue to strive to meet our varying needs and demands for reliability, performance, and convenience.
