  • For children ages three to five, favorite television and movie characters abound. Game covers often display a targeted age range (e.g., "ages 5-8") or rating to inform parents whether the material is appropriate for their children.
  • Games for teenagers often require increased parent supervision as they may contain violence, sex, or drug references. As with the last age group, PC games typically feature ratings (e.g., "T" for teen) based on amount of possibly offensive material. Parents should carefully monitor games before purchasing them for their teenagers to ensure that the game meets the parents' standards. Teens can find a variety of games from educational activities to action or adventure games.
  • Games designed for young adults may include sports games, action or adventure games, games based on movies, educational or brainteaser software, and even a package of games (e.g., card games, puzzle games). Studies have shown that many men and women continue to play PC games to relieve stress and wind down at the end of the day. Somewhat surprisingly, women often play as much as men. Although game creators have often ignored females in the production of games, many games have had plenty of crossover appeal (e.g., The Sims, traditional board games, etc.). Statistics Involving Age and Gender

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) recently conducted a 2006 Gaming Technology study that suggests that adults spend more time playing console or PC games than teenagers. Specifically, about 1/3 of adults spend more than 10 hours per week playing games while only eleven percent of teens do so. Among teenagers, more teens ages 12 to 14 play console and PC games than teens ages 15 to 17. The CEA's study also reveal that PC games in particular have found a large fellowship among adults. The greatest number of women gamers resides in the 25 to 34 age group. In fact, female gamers outnumber male gamers in this particular age group.

PC Gaming Addiction

Although addiction affects only a small percentage of the gaming population, it can be an extremely significant and crippling issue for those affected. People who spend enough time playing a game (i.e., long hours at a time) can achieve what's referred to as "meditative concentration" which is reported as a highly pleasurable state of mind. PC games should be approached as any other activity that presents the possible danger of addiction. Keep track of how long you or your children play and designate time limits for gameplay.

Creating Your Own Gaming Experience

Even if you are unable to find a game that meets your needs, you can purchase software that allows you to design your own games.
