Whether to purchase a game system or upgraded pc is a dilemma facing many casual gamers. What are the advantages of video game consoles?

There are numerous advantages video game consoles possess, especially in regards of the casual gamer. First and foremost, video game console systems are far less expensive than pcs that have comparable gaming capabilities. Gaming consoles also have had limited abilities. They have been traditionally used for gaming, however, the newest generation of consoles have systems that play DVDs, Blu Ray discs, MP3 and Wav files, have USB Ports and expandable memories with large hard drives and are internet capable, all with a price tag a lot less than any gaming pc. It's also much easier and convenient to find used pc games, than it is finding used console games. Neither console systems nor pcs trump one another; they each offer a unique experience and serve their own purpose.

What are the major console systems?

There are three major video game systems on the market. Although they are fairly similar in nature, each has their advantages and followings.
  • Xbox 360
    The Xbox 360 manufactured by Microsoft, is the first of the next generation consoles to hit the market. The Xbox 360 premium bundle, which includes a wireless game controller, a headset for Xbox Live, a component A/V cable, an Ethernet networking cable, and a snap-on 20GB hard drive retails for $399.99, while the 360 Core System, does not include the additional components listed above, retails for $299.99. You may also be able to find the 360 cheaper if you buy it as a used video game console. Since the Xbox 360 is backward compatible, meaning it can play original Xbox games, there are nearly 300+ games to choose from, including many exciting, cutting edge titles available. The highly popular online gaming portal Xbox Live continues with the 360. Being a state of the art vide o gaming system, the Xbox 360 can also function as a digital media hub, as it has built in USB ports with plug and play capabilities for most Windows compatible plug and play cameras, card readers and music players.

  • PlayStation 3
    Set to be released November 17, 2006, the PS3 is predicted to retail for $499 for the core system and $599 for the premium version. The premium version is due to include several game console accessories like a 60 GB hard drive, Wi-Fi capabilities and HDMI video output. There is some concern that the core will not be entirely upgradeable as well as whether or not there will be an adequate supply of the PS3 when it is released. The good is news is that the PS3 is also backward compatible and has an extensive selection of games ready to go. The PS3 will be able to play the new Blu-ray discs.   • Nintendo Wii
    The Wii is Nintendo's next generation gaming system, scheduled to be released sometime during the fall of 2006 which has received very high game console reviews. The unique and innovative motion sensitive controller has garnered much of the attention surrounding the Wii. The wand like television remote, allows gamers to experience game playing in an entirely new way. Simply switch the controller on its side, and it functions as a typically controller, very similar to the traditional NES game pad. The controller also the ability to accept additionally peripheral controller products, which opens the door to further innovation and unexpected advances. Unlike the PS3 and Xbox 360, Wii will not feature high definition out put capabilities. The Wii is also backward compatible, and offers players the ability to download games from previous systems dating back to the original NES and the Sega Genesis, giving the Wii an extensive playlist. It is rumored that the Wii will retail for approximately $300.
Video game consoles have evolved into multimedia centers as capable of delivering an intense gaming experience as doubling as a high definition DVD player. Their increased capacities may lead to a further decline in the pc gaming market and making it easier and cheaper to buy used pc games.
